The territory of Sciacca: between nature, art, and centuries of tradition

Sciacca, located on the south-western coast of Sicily, is a land rich in history and traditions in a landscape that includes sea, cultivated lands and hills. Known for its ancient Greek origins, for the spas loved by the Romans during their settlement and the charm of its historic center, the city has developed over the centuries some excellences refined by time and reached us. Among these we cannot fail to mention the art of ceramics, of which there are traces already during the Neolithic age, and which still maintains great vitality today thanks to the artisans and artists who have their workshops in the streets of the historic center.

Another activity that has defined the city's profile over the centuries is fishing. Sciacca boasts one of the largest and most active fishing ports in Italy and the Mediterranean, and the city's Marina is one of the most characteristic places for its houses attached to each other, separated only by very narrow alleys and arranged on a slope so that they all face the sea. It's a spectacle to admire the different colored facades when you arrive at the port by sea!

Olive trees everywhere.

Our area also stands out for the quality of its agricultural excellence, among which extra virgin olive oil is certainly a flagship product, an integral part of the diet of the inhabitants of this part of Europe since the first human settlements, therefore a food with a very strong cultural identity and a very close link with the territory. The olive groves, then, distributed in the countryside all around the city, characterize the landscape and accompany the traveler who comes from the hinterland. You find them everywhere. In the plain behind Sciacca (the so-called Piana Scunchipani district, a fertile area suited to various crops), on the hills around Mount San Calogero up to its slopes where there is still cultivable land, in the often rugged terrains with unpredictable slopes closer to the coast.

Rich, well-drained soils caressed by the Sicilian sun favor the growth of native varieties such as Biancolilla , Cerasuola and Nocellara del Belice . These centuries-old olive trees, cultivated according to traditional methods, give life to an oil of excellent quality, with intense aromas and an unmistakable flavor.

A DOP Heritage of Excellence

Sciacca is part of the DOP Val di Mazara territory, recognized at European level to guarantee the origin and quality of the oil produced. The DOP oils of this area are characterized by their harmonious taste, with fruity notes, light herbaceous nuances and a perfect balance between bitter and spicy.

The production of oil in Sciacca is not only an economic activity, but a cultural heritage that has been handed down for generations. Local farmers, with dedication and passion, take care of every phase of the process, from the manual harvesting of olives to cold pressing, to preserve all the organoleptic properties of the product.

In addition to the quality of its products, Sciacca offers a pleasant landscape, made of hills dotted with olive trees, vineyards and citrus groves. The nearby nature reserves, such as Torre Salsa and Monte San Calogero, add further charm to the area, making it a unique destination for lovers of nature and good food.

At Bataranni we wanted to enclose all this experience, beauty and preservation of tradition in our range of unique, good, healthy products with an unmistakable personality: our Val di Mazara DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil “ Tenuta Paolo Ciaccio ” and the “ Timpirussi ” Extra Virgin Olive Oil blend.
